The genesis of the Caribbean Climate-Smart Accelerator (CCSA) emerged from an urgent regional imperative: to build resilience against severe climate risks—such as catastrophic hurricanes, rising sea levels, and energy dependence—by uniting project implementation, catalytic investment, and entrepreneurship across the Caribbean.
Announced in 2018 at President Emmanuel Macron’s One Planet Summit, the CCSA was championed by Prime Ministers Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica, Keith Mitchell of Grenada, and Allen Chastanet of Saint Lucia, alongside Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson. Following incubation and the 2020 Island 1.5 Gathering on Necker Island, the CCSA registered as a non-profit in Barbados with strategic backing from CARICOM, OECS, Virgin Unite, IDB, and the World Bank.
Small island developing states contribute less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions yet face the most severe climate disruptions. CCSA leverages this frontline vulnerability to test, refine, and deploy scalable adaptation and clean energy solutions that can be replicated globally.
